Welcome to my fourth post on the 7 Skills Needed To Lead Today’s Workforce. In today's ever changing business environment, it's more important than ever for leaders to connect to people in order to lead the work. Value Based Leadership is about inspiring and motivating others to see the bigger picture and make decisions that are in the best interest of the company. So if you aspire to be a great leader, being a humble leader is key to your leadership foundation.
To be effective today, a leader has to apply what I call Value Base Leadership through collaboration in order to draw out meaningful contributions from many different sources. This requires the skill of humility in which a leader is constantly seeking out new information and perspectives that can help improve decision-making, ultimately contributing to better business decisions.
Humility is not about being weak or submissive. It's about having the courage to see yourself as you are and where you are. You’re able to recognize your strengths and successes, but also understand your weaknesses and limitations. You don’t assume that you always have the answer or know the best way forward. Instead, as a humble leader, you can recognize the critical importance of collaboration.
So what are the key components of leading with a Humility mindset?
Self-awareness or the ability to be able to understand one’s own strengths and weaknesses from a more objective and external perspective
Transcendence or the ability to be able to move away from your own perspective and take on a new, inclusive and a more objective perspective to move the work forward in a more meaningful way.
Humility in leadership allows leaders to see beyond their own ego and tap into the collective wisdom to make decisions that are in the best interest of the team and organization they lead. This leads to a more cohesive and effective team which will be better able to meet the challenges of today's ever-changing business landscape.
Join me next week as I share how to apply Accountability to your leadership style.
