Part 5 - 7 Skills Needed To Lead Today's Workforce

Welcome to my fifth post on the 7 Skills Needed To Lead Today’s Workforce. It's more important than ever for leaders to connect to people in order to lead the work they do.  Being a value based leadership is about inspiring and motivating others to see the bigger picture and make decisions that are in the best interest of the company. So if you aspire to be a value based leader then being accountable and holding your team accountable sets the foundation for success.

Accountability involves taking responsibility for your actions and the actions of the people you lead.  It means fulfilling commitments, owning mistakes, and leading by example. Accountable leaders set clear goals, communicate effectively, and create a culture where team members take ownership of their work. This sounds simple and obvious, but it’s often the biggest barrier to success.

So how does an accountable leader drive results and success?

  • Develop Clear Communication - If communication is vague, teams lose direction and become disengaged. Creating opportunities for feedback in your team is an excellent way to understand where communication is failing and how that can be improved.

  • Delegate Responsibilities - Creating the vision and helping your team understand their roles and how they fit into that vision is critical to the success of the team and company.

  • Collaboration and Listening to Others - Collaboration & listening paths are now an essential part of doing business. Creating an environment where your team is heard & their experiences are shared are a crucial part of developing a culture of accountability.

  • Accept Ownership - Leaders must first be accountable for their own actions. Self-accountability dictates that leaders make sure they set high standards for themselves.  If you want your team to be accountable for their actions then you must first be accountable for our own actions.

By aligning company values with a specific vision and expectations, leaders can help their team understand what accountability looks like and how to engage in it within the organization. Value based leaders foster team accountability by developing teams that think critically about the company’s needs and how the team adds value to those needs.  If leaders are dedicated to accountability, they can build a team that is more motivated, engaged, and productive.

Join me next week as I share how to apply Communication to your leadership style.
